Tokugawa Ieyasu, the most powerful man in Japan after Hideyoshi died in 1598, in the battle of Sekigahara in 1600 defeated Hideyori loyalists and other Western rivals. In 1603, Ieyasu, appointed Shogun by the emperor, established his government in Edo (Tokyo). The Tokugawa shoguns continued to rule Japan remarkably for over 250 years, until the Meiji restoration. 

The Meiji shrine is relatively new, built after the dead of Emperor Meiji and completed in 1920. Destroyed in the W.W.II, it was rebuilt to its present state.
